Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup light brown sugar
- 2 sticks unsalted butter
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups peeled and chopped Granny Smith apples
- 1 stick unsalted butter (for glaze)
- 1/4 cup milk
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)
- 1/4 cup homemade salted caramel sauce
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour, ground cinnamon, baking soda, and fine sea salt. Whisk together until well combined.
- In another bowl, melt the unsalted butter. Stir in both sugars until they are fully incorporated. Add water, buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing gently until just combined. Fold in the chopped Granny Smith apples.
- Pour the batter into your prepared baking pan and spread evenly with a rubber spatula. Bake for about 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- While the cake bakes, prepare the salted caramel glaze. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt one stick of unsalted butter. Once melted, add milk and bring to a simmer. Gradually whisk in powdered sugar until smooth. Stir in vanilla extract and salted caramel sauce until well mixed.
- After removing the cake from the oven, allow it to cool slightly before pouring the salted caramel glaze over top. Let cool completely before slicing into squares—serve and enjoy!
