Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 sticks unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups peeled and chopped Granny Smith apples
  • 1 stick unsalted butter (for glaze)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)
  • 1/4 cup homemade salted caramel sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, ground cinnamon, baking soda, and fine sea salt. Whisk together until well combined.
  3. In another bowl, melt the unsalted butter. Stir in both sugars until they are fully incorporated. Add water, buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing gently until just combined. Fold in the chopped Granny Smith apples.
  5. Pour the batter into your prepared baking pan and spread evenly with a rubber spatula. Bake for about 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. While the cake bakes, prepare the salted caramel glaze. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt one stick of unsalted butter. Once melted, add milk and bring to a simmer. Gradually whisk in powdered sugar until smooth. Stir in vanilla extract and salted caramel sauce until well mixed.
  7. After removing the cake from the oven, allow it to cool slightly before pouring the salted caramel glaze over top. Let cool completely before slicing into squares—serve and enjoy!
